The Chicks' new single, "Not Ready to Make Nice," is now in rotation in several major markets, pushing it to No. 36 on Billboard's country singles chart after its first full week of airplay. Other stations, however, have been slower to embrace it.

Maines told a London audience on the eve of the war in Iraq that the group was "ashamed" the president was from their home state of Texas. Back in the U.S., their music was boycotted and the Chicks said they received death threats, leading them to install metal detectors at their shows.

QUESTION... WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE BOYCOTT?

The price you pay for freedom of speech.

The DC had the right message, they just delivered it in the wrong forum.

I think that the Dixie Chicks are great. Amazing how when a woman speaks her mind, people don't like it.

Hell, I'm ashamed of our president and government, too. I'm not a big fan of country music, but when I heard of the boycott, I went out and bought one of their CDs.

Hopefully you all listened to the new song... it addresses the controversy head on, with Natalie Maines singing in the chorus, "I'm not ready to make nice. I'm not ready to back down. I'm still mad as hell and I don't have time to go round and round and round."

She also sings, "How in the world can the words that I said send somebody so over the edge," and "I made my bed and I sleep like a baby."

The album it's on is "Taking the Long Way" (due out May 23).

I'll be online at 12:00 am, May 23, to place my order!

I couldn't get the sound but I like the lyrics.

I admire them for sticking to their guns and speaking out against a government that just keeps screwing up again and again on this issue.

I'm a big country fan so it will be no hardship for me to get in line to buy this one.

Not a big country fan...nothing is wrong with speaking your mind. It was kinda cowardly doing it on foreign soil though.

I've seen and read interveiws following the big "controversy."

Personally, I don't think Natalie Maines is actually very intelligent. If someone's going to make a ballsy and gutsy statement about the president, it should come from someone with actual intelligent thoughts.

Her message just lost it's impact once Natalie begins to explain her opinion.

cd~ "laud them for speaking out"... me too!

jack~ think the forum thing had to do with the fact the DC happened to be in London when our idiot preznut started the EYE-RACK war.

ddd & kyahgirl~ ditto!

phoenix~ OUCH!!

Shouldn't you be able to speak out on any soil, foreign or not? That isn't cowardly that is honest.Ihadn't heard of them until then and then I felt...ah at least someone in the USA is speaking out. Until then we out here had heard very little from the 'famous'.
I don't like country music but admire them for their guts to get out and say something, anything that they think without the fear of not making money.

She has the right to speak out, and I respect her for doing that. Further, she was absolutely right on with what she said.

However (and here is where I will probably get into some controversy). The question was, 'what do you think of the boycott?' Now, I would never join such a boycott, and I agree that the way to fight it is to buy their music (every progressive who buys a copy just to show them support cancels out one right winger who does not.) However, that said, right wingers have the right to organize a boycott of any particular product or service that they don't like. They boycott various movies regularly. I boycott some things too. Not the same things that they do, or for the same reasons, but for example, right now I am boycotting Wal-Mart over labor issues.

I have the right to not go to Wal-Mart, conservatives have the right to not buy Dixie Chicks albums, and people who disagree with boycotts in general even have the right to buy Dixie Chicks albums at Wal-Mart.

I'm not a fan of their music, but I am a fan of their ballsy gusto. Because that's what it took to stand up against the powerhouse this administration was when they did. Their thoughts are echoed by so many more now, but at the time they were among the few who had the courage to speak out.

As for the boycott, I have to agree with Eli, much as I'd prefer to say it was a crock.

eli & sar~ just as freedom of expression, anyone has a right to boycott but the death threats are a whole new ballgame.

btw, eli, I stand beside you on the boycott of Wal-Mart, have not stepped a foot in their stores in eons.
